Separation includes trial separation, which happens when a
couple decides to live apart during their relationship with the possibility of
reuniting; separation, which is living apart without the intention of
reuniting; permanent separation, which may begin immediately or follow a
trial separation; legal separation in which a court settlement provides for
child custody, alimony, the division of assets, and other matters. People who
would otherwise divorce except for religious or personal reasons sometimes file
for legal separation. State laws differ regarding assets and debts accumulated
during the other types of separation. For legal separations, and to protect
your assets during any separation, you should see a divorce attorney.
