Attorney Maitland makes a great point. Even online there are sites that LOOK like Social Security - But are not.
The only website you should use for Social Security is www.SSA.gov.
If someone calls you from Social Security, ordinarily they would know your SS number.
Make sure the party you called is truly the US Social Security Administration. There are too many imposters out there. Great Question.

Yes-it’s ok to give it to them over the phone. However, I would not do this is “SSA” contacted you, but only if you were the one contacting them on one of their listed official numbers
I agree with the prior answers. So long as you called them - not the other way around - you can give them your SSN over the phone.
