Is it legal to discriminate on the basis of political affiliations, ie: democrat or republican?

The Federal governments Fair Housing Act prohibits this discrimination because of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, and disability. Says nothing about politics or illegality of political bigotry. Your state may have a statute or case law on point---you'd have to check with a NY real estate or landlord tenant attorney to be doubly sure (many give free consultations).
Outside of the law, be prepared for your ad to trigger responses/ consequences you didn't plan on--lots of nut-jobs out there with lots of time on their hands and the belief they are entitled by the internet to express their anger and hurt feelings online and even in person.

Mr. Rafter is licensed in the state and Federal courts in the Commonwealth of Virginia. For specific responses on your specific issues and the laws in your state, you need to speak directly with an attorney in your own state. It is generally not possible for anyone to post sufficient facts or details about their situation that would generate a response on this or any other website that would fully and adequately address the legal problem posed. The answer to “speak to an attorney” is absolutely proper and correct in every situation.
Perhaps you should go over this with your own attorney. Be smart and do not create a potential housing discrimination complaint by placing an advertisement with plain notice that MAGA's and Confederate flags need not apply. Use your head when you interview. As long as you respect the protected classes of tenant applicants, you are free to make your own choice and also free to keep your decision secret unless some rejected tenant sues you.
