What is the meaning of immigrants in U.S. immigration law? Kiritsis Law 212 922 0005
If one is to analyze a legal issue per U.S. immigration laws, it may be especially useful to have a solid understanding of the meaning of the term: immigrant.
Basic Overview.Perhaps in order to understand the immigrant, it may help by comparing it to meaning of the term non immigrant. This is broad generalization and simplification, but an immigrant is typically one who is coming to the U.S. with the intent to stay on a permanent basis, whereas a non-immigrant is one who is coming here for a non permanent/temporary basis.
Common Issues. The importance of the term immigrant is crucial for a number of reasons. First of all, it may be determined on what options (i.e. visa type categories) a person may have with regards to seeking U.S. citizenship. In addition, whether one has met the immigrant classification may impact his/her rights and responsibilities in other areas of the law, such as tax treatment, bankrupcy law, and family/matrimonial law.
