What is Avvo?

Inspired by the Italian word for lawyer, “avvocato,” Avvo launched in Seattle in 2007 with a bold idea: make finding a lawyer as straightforward as choosing a hotel or doctor online. By 2010, Avvo’s directory profiled over 90% of attorneys nationwide. By 2014, our Q&A forum had surpassed 5 million questions and answers, with a 99% response rate. In 2018, Avvo joined Internet Brands as part of the Martindale‑Avvo network, alongside leaders like Martindale-Hubbell, Nolo, and Lawyers.com, creating one of the largest online legal networks and attracting over 25 million monthly consumers. Most recently, our network was recognized in The National Law Journal's 2026 "Best Of" survey, winning multiple awards for our attorney rating and legal marketing services.

How the Avvo Rating Works

The Avvo Rating is calculated by a proprietary model developed with input from attorneys, consumers, and other legal professionals. It draws on two data sources: public records (from state bars, regulatory agencies, and courts) and information attorneys share on their profiles. Each lawyer is evaluated using the same objective criteria—experience, education, professional achievements, peer endorsements, and disciplinary history.

Every factor that influences the score is visible on the attorney's profile, and ratings automatically update as new data arrives. The same standards apply to every attorney. The rating can't be bought: no manual overrides, no exceptions, and no commercial relationship with Avvo can change the number.
